Instructions for an amended return say go to tools under the account settings. I don't see this. I go to files, and there is no 2015 taxdatafile. Where is this?

It doesn't have anything to do with MY ACCOUNT or TOOLS.  It's downloaded from the 2015 Tax Timeline.  See my answer below.

thanks - I tried the timeline, but only saw PDFs. this time i did see the button on the right side for prior tax timelines, and found the 2015. Thanks

Here's how to download the *.tax2015 data file from Online TurboTax.   If it was prepared in a paid edition in 2015, then you should have access to it.    If it was prepared in Free Edition, access will be locked until you pay for a 2016 product (we can tell you how.)

• Log in using the same User ID that was used for the 2015 return.
• Go to the 2015 Tax Timeline.
• Scroll down to "Some things you can do."
• Choose "download *.tax file".
