Yes, you can amend your return. Start the amended return before changing that you are a member of an American tribe.
To Amend(change) your 2020 TurboTax Online return, follow these steps:
Only after the amend process has been started, then, navigate to where you claimed the Native American designation to adjust it. The state filing requirements will be specific to your state.
For more information, see: Publication 5424 Income Tax Guide for Native American Individuals and Sole Proprietors
sorry i should’ve been more specific. i’m having trouble finding that section where i can change that i’m a member.
I am assuming that the section of the return you are looking for is for health insurance and am providing information below on that:
Anyone on your taxes who belongs to a federally-recognized Indian tribe or is eligible to receive health care services through the Indian Health Service, tribes and tribal organizations, or urban Indian organizations, is eligible to get the tax penalty for going without health insurance in 2016 waived.
Please follow the steps below to enter the Health Coverage in TurboTax Online:
Sign into your TurboTax Online account.
Go to Federal Taxes then Health Insurance.
Next you will see the question "Did you have health insurance coverage in 2016"?, select "I didn't have it at any point".
Click Continue then you will see " Did you have a situation that waives the tax penalty for being uninsured"?
Scroll down to "Wasn't required to get Insurance". Then check the box that says Indian tribe member or eligible for Indian health care.
Then select Continue and enter the months that you had coverage.
If this does not address your question please reply below.
If you are instead looking for the following in your state return:
Tribal members living and working on tribal land are generally not required to file state returns for that income. You do not say which state you are in, but if this exclusion applies in your state there will be a question in your state return interview to report this situation.
If you cannot find the question, please comment with your state and I will see if I can find exactly where the question is in your state return.
