When mailing a1040x amended tax return do I need to include the money that was owed on the original return?

If you owed taxes on your original federal tax return but haven't made the corresponding payment yet, you should consider making this payment separately from your amended federal tax return because it is a separate filing and the IRS may get confused if you combine original and amended transactions and/or filings.

Further, TurboTax calculates your amended tax refunds or taxes owed based on the assumption you already received the refunds you originally filed for or paid taxes owed. If you owed taxes on your original federal tax return, the amount owed should be reported on Form 1040X Line 16 Total amount paid with request for extension of time to file, tax paid with original return, and additional tax paid after return was filed (not including penalties, if applicable).
