When I save my turbo tax file this year, I found some files saved under my usual turbo file file name but with ~ prefix like ~TurboTaxfile. What are those files for?

I get used to seeing just one turbo tax file per return. But this year I found more and more file name with ~, this makes it difficult to back up tax records.

The tilde files are backups that can be used if the main file gets corrupted due to power-outages, unexpected computer shutdowns, etc.  Certainly not perfect, but can save your bacon in certain situations.

How does one use these tilde (~) backup files?  I had done several days worth of work on a very complex tax return when my computer crashed.  A full Windows re-installation was required.  (Yes, I know--my fault for not saving regularly.)

I see two files:
2022 Surname D Form 1040 Individual Tax Return.tax2022       4/17/2023

~2022 Surname D Form 1040 Individual Tax Return.tax2022     10/19/2023

After re-installing Turbotax, I tried to open the tilde file, but I get the message:

We're having trouble opening your file.

You can try using your back-up file instead. You'll find

instructions on how to open your back-up file in the link

The older file seems to open fine.

Try changing the name and take the ~ off the front.  And make the name different than the other .tax2022 file so it doesn't overwrite it.

Are you trying to open it with the 2022 program?

Yes, that's exactly how I attempted to open it.  I first tried with the filename as-is (with the tilde).  Then I renamed the non-backup to a safe name to prevent overwriting, and renamed the backup to the name that the previous non-backup file had.  I still got the error message.

I did previously find that and read through it.  I am indeed attempting to open the tax2022 with Turbotax Premier 2022.

I know that sometimes it could be as simple as a dumb human error, so I appreciate you double checking on that.
