No need to feel guilty or behind in life.   It is not surprising that someone your age has no experience with filing a tax return.   There is plenty of help available to you.   First---provide some details---but nothing personal like your Social Security number or contact information.

Are you a full-time student?   Did you work at a job for which you will receive a W-2?   Did you have more than one job in 2023?   Has tax, Social Security and Medicare been withheld from your paychecks?    Or did you work as an independent contractor----for example, driving for instacart, doordash, grubhub, mowing grass, etc. etc. etc. ??

What if I don’t know anything about taxes? I’m 19 going in 20 in January and I don’t know nothing about taxes? can I get some assistance about taxes if I don’t know none?

Hi thank you for getting back to me at this time!

Hi, I appreciate you responding to me now. Yes, I do have the W-4 form from my time spent working at Amazon Warehouse! and I think my paychecks have had taxes like Social Security and Medicare deducted from them And  it was four to five hours a day at a part-time job. I haven't used the W-2 form before or know what’s W-2 form is . I apologize…
My first semester of community college concluded on December 15th. I dropped 3 of the twelve credits I was meant to be taking in my first semester since I didn't feel very confident about it. January 8th will mark the commencement of the semester. Although I haven't enrolled in a course yet, I intend to take roughly 7-8 credits asSo I’m in community college my first semester which ended in December 15th I was supposed to be taking 12 credits but I dropped 3 credit course in my first of the starting semester because I wasn’t feeling very confident about it. The semester about start in January 8th spring I have not yet registered course but I plan to take about… 7-8 credits as part timer because I plan to work full time job as homecare job.  Please directly contact me at [email address removed] if needed. Thank you!

In January you will receive a document called a W-2 from Amazon---or they might instruct you to go to their payroll website to get it.  But you will need your W-2 to complete a tax return.  That will show how much you earned, how much federal and state tax was withheld, etc.  All of the information on your W-2 gets entered on your tax return form.  And do not throw away the W-2!   Keep it somewhere safe where you will not lose it.

If you earned more than $4700 in 2023, then no one can claim you as a dependent, even if you still live at home with your parents, since you were not a full-time student and were 19 years old in 2023.  Make sure to have a conversation with your parents and have that understanding so there is no confusion in that regard for them or for you.

Your tax return should be a simple one, for which you can probably use the Free Edition---unless you have some other income you have not mentioned here or some other complication we do not know about.

When you have your W-2 you will be ready to prepare a 2023 tax return, and you can seek a refund of some -- or maybe all -- of the amount that was withheld from your paychecks for federal and state tax.  You will not get back the amounts that were withheld for Social Security or Medicare.

If you need help, post back in the user forum.   Do not post your email address, phone number or any other personal information here.  This is a public web site that can be seen by anyone on the internet, including scammers who would love to contact you personally and pretend to be from TurboTax.

When you get your W-2-----if box 1 shows less than $4700 earned in 2023, that changes things.   If you earned less than $4700, you can be claimed as a dependent by parents who you live with, and will need to say that on your own tax return.   Check with us in the user forum when you get that W-2.

Ok! Bye the way I no longer work at Amazon. But I plan to start working at homecare?

Quick question. So the W-4 form is not important as the W-2 form?

I don’t get it? What happens if you make more than 47000 in 2023? I know you say my parents can’t claim me? Can you please explain that? Thank you

@Abdufetah Not $47000-----$4700----with two zeros.    If you made less than $4700 in 2023 and your parents supported you -- they can claim you as a dependent, which means they paid for over half your support by providing food and shelter, etc. to you.      By claiming you as a dependent they get a tax break on their own tax return.    If you made more than $4700, they cannot claim you as a dependent.

But before any assumptions----do you in fact live with parents---or are you on your own --  living with roommates, etc.?

@xmasbaby0 I live with my mother. She mostly done my taxes because I knew nothing about taxes nor how it’s processed when I was working at Amazon started in September 5th ended at late November. What happens if I were to make more than $4700 in 2023?

If you made more than $4700 in 2023, then your mom cannot claim you as a dependent on her tax return.  She loses the $500 tax credit for claiming you.   The amount in box 1 of your W-2 is going to make a difference, so that is why you need to ask here again when you have your W-2 in hand.    It sounds like you only worked for about three months, so we cannot guess what is going to be in box 1 of your W-2.

@xmasbaby0 I actually have access to my W-2 form from my previously Amazon warehouse job? … I’m sorry but I have no idea what I’m looking here 😭 so many numbers and sections!

should I send it to you? Is it too sensitive info? To send W-2 form?

Go to the IRS website where you can get all the information you will need.
Look for the 1040 (and 1040-SR) Instructions.

www.irs.gov

In the old days, IRS would mail this to everyone.
Now, you have to go online and find it yourself.

IRS Free File program makes tax prep software available for no cost.
The software includes all the forms you will need and will guide you.

You shouldn't need to pay anyone to do your taxes for you, unless you are totally form-challenged.

Do not post your W-2 in this forum.   As explained earlier to you, this is a public web site.  Anyone using the internet can see what you post here.   Your W-2 will have your name, address and Social Security number on it.    You do not want to put your personal information here and make it available for identity thieves.   When you can see your W-2, you are okay to tell us what is in box 1.   That is all we need to know in order to advise you as to whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.   Do not post your name, your address, your SSN, your email, your phone number, your banking information, etc.
