What does it mean when its telling me they have chosen the standard deduction for me? is the amount shown going to be deducted from my return?

That's a deduction from your income, reducing your "taxable income". If you had enough itemized deductions to exceed the standard deduction then TurboTax would have used the itemized deduction amount instead.
