Was supposed to receive a refund now I owe $1774

Hello,

I filed my taxes in January of this year and was supposed to receive a federal refund of $2426. The IRS accepted my return on 1/24/22. It was over a month that I receive a letter from the irs claiming I now owe them $1774! The letter lists that my either my ssn was wrong, the last name of one of my dependents was wrong, one or more of my dependents exceed the age limit, my adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 & the amount was computed incorrectly.

First, all of those claims are false. I double checked my return thoroughly. All the information entered is accurate and I do not fall under any of those claims.

I have tried numerous times to reach anyone and everyone at the IRS only to receive automated messagings stating the same information in the letter.

I have ZERO offsets. This should not be happening! Judging from the amount of posts here, inaccurate filing with Tubo Tax is Happening to everyone whose used this product. Reminiscent of the trouble last year when Intuit and Turbo Tax delayed many customers from receiving their stimulus on time.

Here are all the IRS numbers I have called:

Treasury/Offsets: [phone number removed]

Debt Management: [phone number removed]

TPG: [phone number removed]

Bureau of Fiscal Service: [phone number removed]

Internal Revenue: [phone number removed]

Turbo Tax Support: [phone number removed]

Intuit [phone number removed]

IRS: [phone number removed]

IRS Transcripts Requests: [phone number removed]

Check IRS Status or Refund: [phone number removed]

Check Status of Return: [phone number removed]

IRS Status of Amended Return: [phone number removed]

TurboTax I need assistance on your end. I have paid your company for years and relied on you to do what’s right. The information on other threads is very concerning to me.

I suspect the change has to do with the child/children

Your 1774 + 2426 = 4200

.....and that is likely to have something to do with the child tax credit/advanced credit   ?  3 x 1400 = 4200.

(Edited:  But I'm probably confusing the Advanced child tax credit with the "Additional" Child tax credit...that "Additional" one is $1400 per eligible kid.  I get them all mixed up too.   What is the Additional Child Tax Credit? (intuit.com))

(edited out)

(or could it be you are separated/divorced ..... and there is a conflict as to which ex-spouse is claiming the child tax credits for 2021?)

You may need to carefully check the birthdate(s) of your child/children if you are certain their names SSNs are correct......when entering birthdates, you need to enter the entire 4 digits for the year of birth...not just the last two.

But no, I have no idea how to correct that issue.....maybe the IRS processing has some bug they'll fix later?

Certainly, you can call TTX but they probably won't know how to fix it either:

What is the TurboTax phone number? (intuit.com)

There are Tax Advocates nationwide you could contact, but make sure you have a full printout of your tax file first.

Thate IRS message is just a generic one, and lists several possibilities.
