W2C Box 12

Hi all,

I received a W2C from my employer after I filed my taxes. Box 12 had some pretty dramatic differences, so I wanted to see if that would impact my refund. The amounts are as follows:

Original:

12a 0.00 | D

12b 0.00 | DD

12c 143 | E

Updated:

12a D | 1438.57

12b DD | 4418.22

12c E | 0.00

How do y'all think this will impact things, if at all? I'm not able to amend my returns just yet, as TurboTax hasn't yet released that feature for this year.

Thanks!

Should not make any difference unless you paid any tax on the 143.00 wrongly reported on the first W-2.

Box 12 Codes

It could.   The code DD is information only and won't change anything.

Are yiu sure that box 1 did not also change to reflect the code D (401(k) deferrals?   It possible that was accounted for in the original W-2.

he additional code D deferral might make a difference with the 8880 form (retirement savers credit).

CHAMP if someone receives a W2C like this ( and the only changes are to box 12) how does one go about filing.

Do they take all of the wage information on the ORIGINAL W2 and then override the Box 12 items with the W2C items ( again because the W2C doesnt show wage information since its not changing)

Yes, you use all the original W-2 figures that were not changed, then enter the corrected figures in the boxes indicated on your W-2C form.  This will be accurate and you maintain both copies of your forms in your file for your records.
