I filed fed and state taxes electronically. Both returns have been accepted by government tax offices. Today TurboTax had updates, the fed update marked "critical". If I update my version of TT and then run another review, will TT tell me if I have to file an amended return?

Not sure if the program gives you a notice but if you need to file an amended return due to updates, you can look at your refund monitors, if they change or any updated form changes you should amend your return.
FIRST ... before you ever update AFTER you have filed you SHOULD save a PDF & .taxfile of the filed return on a separate storage medium like a thumb drive so if the update does change your return you have the original info to use to figure out what changed if you do need to amend the return.
Next ... the "critical" fed update most likely is the change of the filing deadline ... my professional program had that correction this AM.
