Is it true that Turbotax desktop CD download doesn't let you e-file amended returns? Both federal and state returns. Original returns were e-filed using the software.

If you are referring to a 2024 return, an amended 2024 return can be e-filed if you successfully e-filed the original return. A past year amended return must be filed by mail; you cannot e-file a past year amended return.
For 2022, 2023. That's sad. because what's the chance that we need to amend the same year's return that we just filed a few days ago.
And...you do realize that the only way to file those original 2022 and 2023 returns that you say you "just filed" was by mail? You cannot e-file any kind of past year return. E-filing is permanently closed for all tax years except 2024 for users of TurboTax.
Did you use the desktop download software for each of them ----the software for 2022 and for 2023?
The only way to file returns for 2022 or 2023 is to print them, sign and date them in ink, and mail them.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
If I only amend one page of my return, do i need to print out all my returns including totally un-relevant pages?
Yes I used the desktop download software for 2022 and for 2023. There is a button "amend return" but after I amended and click "file", it says the deadline of e-file is the same as the deadline of filing that year's tax returns. I actually didn't find the button to file amended return, only the button where I filed my original returns.
@dc20222023 It is becoming even more confusing to figure out what you did. You mentioned recently ("a few days ago") filing returns for 2022 and 2023----but you seem to think you e-filed---which would be impossible. When did you file your 2022 and 2023 returns?
@xmasbaby0 "a few days ago" was the scenario that someone e-filed their 2022 tax returns on Oct 15th 2023 for example. Turbotax's deadline to e-file amended 2022 tax return is the same day.
Yes. Efiling closes for original and amended returns on the same day each year. It is very possible someone would need to amend their return right away after filing if they found they left out a W2 or 1099. We always tell people to wait until the original return was done processing and they get the first refund before amending. And a lot people file too early before they get all their tax forms and then need to amend.
@dc20222023 It is about as clear as mud when you filed your 2022 and 2023 returns. But if you are amending those returns--hopefully after they were fully processed-- then you have to amend correctly by going to Other Tax Situations in your desktop software programs, then go down to Other Tax Forms> Amend a Return to prepare a Form 1040X to make the correction(s) you need to make. Print, sign, and mail the Form 1040X to the IRS. Do not combine 2022 and 2023 in the same envelope. Mail each one separately or you risk that one of them will be overlooked by the human who opens the envelope. Use tracking like certified mail so you will know it was received. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
Any workaround on e-filing older returns? Using another software?
We don't know. Call around to local places. But you can probably only efile an amended return if the original return was efiled first from the same account and place.
Only certain paid tax pros using professional tax software can e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax. Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in. Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.
