How do i know if i took a standard deduction or a itmized for 2014

To determine whether you took the standard deduction or itemized in 2014, pull out last year's tax return and look on these lines: 

  • For the 1040, line 40
  • For the 1040A, line 24

For 2014, the standard deduction amounts were $6,200 for Single or Married Filing Separately, $12,400 for Married Filing Jointly and $9,100 for Head of Household.  If you had that corresponding amount, you took the standard deduction.  For any other amount, you itemized. 

Also, if you filed a 1040EZ, then you did in fact use the standard deduction.
