I made a mistake after submitting my return and I tried to amend my tax return. I said "No" to the third stimulus check question previously on my original tax return and now when I tried to amend my tax return, the question doesn't show up anymore. Is this important and will it affect my tax return in anyway?

If you claimed a Recovery rebate credit on your tax return and that amount is wrong, the IRS says that you should not amend your tax return.
the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to your tax return, and continue processing your return. If a correction is needed, there may be a delay in processing your return and the IRS will send you a notice explaining any change made.

Hello MinhT1,
Thank you for the reply, but unfortunately, I am not sure what a recovery rebate credit that you are referring to means. Is it another word for a third stimulus check that was given last year? Can you please elaborate further please? Thank you.
Yes ... look at line 30 of the form 1040 ... that is where the third stimulus credit is located. If you DID get the third stimulus payment but said you did not then the IRS will catch this error and adjust the refund accordingly automatically. No amendment is required.
Thank you for the reply,
I just have one more question, will the IRS penalize me for this if they have to change it on their end?
