The NC return starts with your Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and then subtracts any federally taxable Social Security benefits, so they are not taxed on the NC return. This amount will be shown on the NC Form D-400 Schedule S Line 9.
You can see a preview of your NC tax summary before filing by using the steps below. The tax summary may not specifically show what you would like to see. Or, you can print or see a PDF of your return after paying the filing fees, but before electronically filing your return.
To preview your NC tax summary, use these steps:
Click My Account at the top of your screen
Click Tools
On the Tools Center page, below “Other helpful links…”, click View Tax Summary
Click NC Tax Summary shown at the top of your screen
Use the Back choice at the top of the screen to return to your tax return
