Just another FYI... I know the IRS claims that you can actually verify your identity online but don’t bother trying because it hasn’t worked for the past 3 years. You’ll try to go online and verify but will do nothing but waste your time and continue to receive error messages...then have to call and verify. So, just save time and energy and call. I found over the years that Monday and Friday is the WORST time to do this. You’ll have a much shorter hold time if you attempt to verify on Wednesday or Thursday by calling in around 11-12 PT. That seems to be the time that is a little easier to get through and not have to be on hold for an hour or two. Also, when you call in, make sure to have the letter handy because they may ask for the reference number (located in the center of the letter above the 800 #) off the form and the form # ( in top right corner...if memory serves me correct it should be a 4 digit code with a letter or two behind it) and also have your info from your current tax return and the last year you filed. You can only verify once! So if you’re married or were married last time you filed, they will ask for your spouses information(social, dob, maiden name). Failure to provide the representative with the correct information will only slow the process even more! You’ll then be required to go into the closest IRS office with 2 forms of identification, copies of your current tax return and ALL supporting documents as well as copies of the most recent years tax returns and ALL supporting documents. This is a nightmare because failure to have proof of exactly what you filed can result in forfeiture of your refund. So make that phone call count! Let me know if you need more information or have further questions. I’m happy to help whomever.
