If you get this message there is no need to worry. You haven’t done anything wrong, nor are you in any trouble. There are a few reasons this message may show when you check your status.
1.) if you attempt to check your status using your social and you enter the wrong information, such as the wrong refund amount or filing status.
2.) if someone you claimed as a dependent attempts to check their filing status using their social, such as your son or daughter.
3.) this is the most common reason. I have been doing this for the past three years. You will get this message when the IRS is needing to verify your identity. You should receive a letter in the mail with a week or two of seeing this message that will have a reference number. You’ll be asked to call and answer some personal questions such as, your mother’s maiden name, father’s name, place of birth, date of birth, previous street addresses, amount of refund from a previous year, the AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) from a previous year, and if you’re married or have been previously you may be asked to provide information about your spouse/ex’s(their social, D.O.B., place of birth, etc.). In addition, they will usually ask questions about your current return such as the amount you expect refunded this year, the AGI (see above), wages, and always the information regarding your direct deposit (account and routing #’s)
I hope it just clarifies things or puts your mind at ease. I know the first time I saw this message it freaked me out. I’m posting this so it will let everyone know not to call or contact the IRS. This will speed up the identity verification process that you and everyone else seeing this message will have to go through. It will help save everyone a lot of time and frustration so that no one has to sit on hold for hours like I’ve had two in the past. I hope everyone is a little more at ease now from sharing this.
