Taxes during an amendment (LONG STORY WARNING)

Hello,

I recently submitted a 1040X for the year 2018. The year I am amending has caused many issues. I like a fool compiled multiple years' worth of returns on Turbotax (not knowing I needed a different software to file for EACH year). This in return combined all of the information to make it seem like I earned over 100K in income for 2018 and that I owed 18k in back taxes. I thought this is what you did when you failed to file for multiple years. So I asked a question on this forum and was informed NO NO NO you did that completely wrong!! So I filed an amended return to straighten it out. Meanwhile, I have been filing my returns on time for 2019-2021. The IRS has offset my refunds for each of these years. I filed my amended return in March 2021 and it still is not processed. Should I wait for this to be fixed before filing for 2022 taxes in January? The IRS shows that I still have a balance and I don't want this return to be offset as well. Do I wait or Do I file on time? Some people have been waiting for over a year !!. I just don't want April to come and I still haven't filed my return because I'm waiting for the 1040X to be completed.

Any amended return filed in March 2021 would have been processed already.

You have to contact IRS to find the status of that 1040-X.

call 800::829::0922 and have a copy of your 1040-X form ready to discuss it.

In your situation, with the offset still on the books,  I would wait to file the 2022 return as long as needed.  Put the return on extension if needed.

Sorry !!! I filed March 2022!

You don't have to cross this bridge for another six months.

First find out if IRS actually got your amended tax return.

You amended the 2018 return that included previous years to be for only 2018, right?  Then what did you do with the prior years?  Do you still need to file 2017 and earlier?

You filed the 2021 tax return ... I was talking about the 2022 return you file next year.

They have received it. I have called several times and it doesn't look like they will be touching it until the beginning of the year if I'm lucky. I called in Sept and they told me to wait an additional 20 weeks!!??? I filed on 3/7/22 and it hasn't even been touched. I was told it hasn't been assigned to anyone and once it does that's technically when the 20 weeks start... WTF

Contact your Member of Congress for assistance.

They are campaigning right now but you will be referred to an assistant in their local office anyway.

They can expedite processing by requesting a status from the IRS.

You still need to file 2016 & 2017 returns ???    If so any refund for those tax years will not be paid however you should file if the IRS says you owe but if you file the return you will not.   Expect the return to take at least 6 months to process ... probably much much longer due to the backlog.    If the IRS will grab the 2022 refund  since the prior year returns have not been processed then wait to file it until they catch up ... you have 3 years to file a return for a refund.

Yea, I know I wouldn't be getting a refund for 2016 and 2017. I just didn't know I screwed all of this up until last year. So now I just want to wait for everything to get figured out with the amended return and then I will file 2016 and 2017 and pay whatever is owed for those years. ( I'm sure I will have a balance of some amount).  I called the IRS this morning and spoke with a woman and she said my return was "added to a queue" and is just waiting to be assigned to someone. It was added on 9/6/22 but I got the whole call back in 30 days blah blah blah. I'm right at the 30-week mark so we shall see...

UPDATE... ITs 12/21/22 and I still have NOT seen any changes on my transcripts every time I call the IRS they say to call back in 30days
