Tax question re: claiming a dependent

My 18-yr-old son filed his taxes but selected the box that said no on could claim him as a dependent. On my federal taxes (as parent), I claimed him because he met the qualifying child requirements (lives at home, full-time student, we pay for everything, etc.). My taxes were rejected because his were already accepted and his social security number had already been filed as a taxpayer, rather than a dependent. So, I amended his (selecting someone else could claim him as a dependent) and it was accepted. How long should I wait before resubmitting mine, claiming him as a dependent? I'm getting down to the wire...only 7 days left. Thank you!

Waiting for his amended return will not help you.   Print, sign and date your own return that claims him in ink, and mail your return in.   You have been blocked from e-filing by his very common mistake---which he probably will not make again next year.....

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Tax question re: claiming a dependent

You should be able to file electronically in this case if you apply for an Identity Protection Pin (IP PIN).

This is a new way that the IRS has this year to allow for a second filing when a return is rejected for a return already filed using the Social Security number of a dependent.

You can obtain the PIN via your IRS account which takes a few minutes to set up. (You do that at the IRS website.)   Once at the IRS website scroll through the tolls for "My Account" to apply.

You will need to get a new pin every year (via the same account) to file once you have an IP PIN. Note that you should get the PIN for yourself (the taxpayer) not the dependent.

Once you have the IP PIN, HERE is how to enter it in TurboTax.

If the IP PIN doesn't work, you will need to mail your return with a postmark of no later than April 15.

Okay, thank you. If I mail in, some of my 1099-NEC's only sent me a copy for IRS, so I would not have a state copy to send with state return. Will that be ok?

You do not need to attach the 1099-NECs unless they have taxes withheld.  Include all of your W2s but only 1099s with taxes withheld.
