I filed my taxes on Jan 7th, 21. I hadn’t received my second stimulus payment at that point, so I reported that when asked on my taxes and the $1200 was added to my refund amount. Well, I received the stimulus payment the next day in my bank account. What do I do now? Can I edit those details on my return since my taxes won’t be accepted by the IRS until late January? I’ve already submitted my efile and it doesn’t look like there’s a way to edit.

There is no way to edit a tax return that you have e-filed. (Which is why you should not rush to e-file). It will remain in "pending" on the server until the IRS begins to accept and reject returns at the end of January. Sit tight and see if your return is accepted or rejected. If they reject it later in the month you will be able to make corrections. If it accepted, we do not know yet if the IRS will catch this mistake or if you will have to go through the process to amend your return a few months from now.

Thank you, I figured I’d need to wait for rejection or acceptance. This confirms it. Appreciate your input.
i filed my taxes before i received my second stimulis check 2 weeks later i have received what do i do now
You cannot make changes to a return that is in pending or to a return that has just been accepted.
We do not know if entering the wrong stimulus amount will delay your refund --- or for how long if it does. The IRS has not offered any guidance yet on how they will handle returns that have incorrect stimulus amounts entered. We all just have to wait and see. You are among many people who were confused and entered incorrect stimulus amounts, or who filed early and then received a check.
Have there been any other updates? My return was accepted 2/11/21 and I still haven't received my refund or heard of what I should do about this issue that many people experienced.
Yes, I’m the original poster.
I received my taxes (4 days early actually) and the IRS just deducted the stimulus amount from my refund. All is well, just be patient. 😁👍🏼
Do I have to include the stimulus check(s) on my 2020 tax returns when I rec'd the money in 2021???
@Rockshouse Yes you do---you are asked specifically if you received the first and second checks---you need to answer correctly as to receiving it whether you got it at the end of 2020 or early in 2021.
Congress passed the 2nd stimulus bill at the end of 2020. Both stimulus checks were an advance credit for your 2020 tax return, The 2nd stimulus checks started going out at the very end of December 2020 and continued into early January 2021. When you fill out the recovery rebate credit it is important for you to enter the entire total of the amount you have received for yourself, your spouse, and your dependent children so far.
Entering the wrong amount will delay your 2020 refund.
It should help you if you bear in mind that the purpose of the question is to determine if you have already received the amounts you should have received.
