There is usually a summary screen at the end of finishing your return and getting ready to file that does combine the grand total of your Federal and state tax returns.  If you are getting a refund from the Federal return, but have a similar balance due on the state return then that summary screen may have been mistaken for just your state refund alone.

Before actually filing your returns, you should take a look at the actual tax return forms or the online tax summary.  Either of these will clarify the bottom line balance due or refund shown on the return.  Then, go from there to decide if you have further questions or need more help.

If you are using TurboTax Online, use these steps to view the Federal and state tax summary:

  1. From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the pop-up menu titled “Tools Center”, select View Tax Summary to see the Federal summary
  5. On the left sidebar, select  XX Tax Summary to see your state summary

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, click on the Forms button at the top of the screen to see your actual tax forms for the Federal and state returns.
