my granddaughter filed her taxes in february. in march she got a letter from the irs saying they were amending her return. she wrote a response. in may they sent a letter saying that they were looking for her return. nothing about the amendment, nothing about the refund. in early july she wrote another letter, asking where her refund was. yesterday she got a letter from them saying they had paid her 2021 refund.
what can she do? who can she call or write to get help?

let's back up
1) why did the IRS adjust the return? why did your grand-daughter write a letter back (I assume she didn't agree with the adjustment). Can you explain what the adjustment was and why your granddaughter didn't agree? let's try to understand whether the IRS was right or your granddaughter was right.
2) have you looked at the transcript to determine if and when the refund occured?
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
the irs claimed the ssn was wrong.
the ssn was copied straight off the card.
@ceceholland - how much was the refunds adjusted?
normally, the IRS lists a number of possible reasons that refund was adjusted. Please review the letter and confirm whether there were other reasons listed. how are you sure an incorrect SSN was the reason?
and if indeed the only reason they claimed the SSN was wrong, was the NAME copied correctly from the card?
while we are at it, is your granddaugher a dependent of someone else? did she correctly check the 'can be claimed by someone else' box? did someone else claim her?
