Federal accepted my filing on February 12th. The IRS Refund tool says there was a Refund Error the information doesn’t match. I put it exactly how it is on the tax paperwork. What do I need to do?

If there is no record of your return, or the system says the information is wrong, please make sure you are entering the correct social security number, filing status, and refund amount.

To verify your Social Security Number:

  • If you filed a Form 1040, the Social Security Number is shown on Page 1 in the upper right-hand corner.
  • If you filed a Form 1040NR, the Social Security Number is shown on Page 1 in the upper right-hand corner.
  • If you filed a Form 1040PR, the Social Security Number is shown on Page 1 in the upper right-hand corner.
  • If you filed a Form 1040SS, the Social Security Number is shown on Page 1 in the upper right-hand corner.

 To verify your refund amount:

  • If you filed a Form 1040, the Refund Amount is shown on Line 35a.
  • If you filed a Form 1040NR, the Refund Amount is shown on Line 35a.
  • If you filed a Form 1040PR, the Refund Amount is shown on Line 14a.
  • If you filed a Form 1040SS, the Refund Amount is shown on Line 14a.

 To verify your filing status:

  • If you filed a Form 1040, the Filing Status is shown on the top of the form above your name and social security number.
  • If you filed a Form 1040NR, the Filing Status is shown on the top of the form above your name and social security number.
  • If you filed a Form 1040PR, the Filing Status is shown on Page 1, Part 1, Line 1.
  • If you filed a Form 1040SS, the Filing Status is shown on Page 1, Part 1, Line 1.

this past weekend the IRS did a maintenance update on their system.  Try again today.

I tried again today and I’m still getting the message. I have used the tool in the past with no problem.

This is the message I keep getting. I’ve reentered and reentered.

@Russ3311 Be sure you are entering your Federal Refund amount only before any fees, if applicable. If you are filing joint, enter the filers social security number that appears first on the tax return. If your E-file status does show accepted, I would suggest to keep checking back on the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool, as there may be a issue or update happening.

You may also try contacting the IRS. Please see their contact information in the following link: How do I contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?
