I filed my Michigan tax return yesterday and it was accepted. I was getting a $1610 refund. As a senior on a fixed income, imagine my surprise when I saw $1610 was withdrawn from my checking account overdrawing my account and I didn't have enough money in my savings account to cover the balance owed. I spoke the with "Tax Expert" who said that was weird, I was the second person from Michigan that called today with the same issue. He had no idea how to do anything to help. He said maybe file a claim with the state, and file a file with the Accuracy Guarantee department with Turbo Tax. But he had no idea how I could get in touch with them. He asked if I bought the insurance? No. Why? I have a simple return, he gave a big sigh and said I could be out that money. I screamed.. What do I do??

For clarity: You have the potential to get your refund back if you file an amended return which addresses the known issues on MI Form 4884 for surviving spouse benefits (see here), if this applies to you. You can follow the link for help with amending your return, which is still being fixed by our development team. [Edited 04/16/26|7:22pm PST] @JudyVB
You have the right to disagree with tax notices and assessments sent to you from the Michigan Treasury, and send a notice response asking for abatement. From the MI DoT page What To Do If You Disagree:
If you believe you have received a bill for taxes due that you do not owe, send the following information to support your claim:
- A letter explaining why the tax is not due with documents to support the reasons you outline in your letter. Be sure to include your account number (Social Security or tax identification number) on the letter.
- A legible copy of the front and back of your canceled check or money order
- A copy of the billing notice you received from the Michigan Department of Treasury.
Mail the above information to the address that appears on the bill.
Information about how to appeal the bill can be found on the back of the billing notice, or in the Taxpayer Rights Handbook.
Please Note: If you received retirement income under surviving spouse benefits, you likely need to file an amended return. The above notice response instructions will not work if your situation matches this discussion.

Thank you for the information, but none of it applies to my asking for help. After spending hours today looking thru all deposits and withdrawals in my checking account, I found my correct tax refund was deposited $1856 even on my written paper work I showed $1812 was my refund amount. When I was looking at my Turbo Tax return and what it showed to compare. Submitting the return day after day it showed my Michigan tax return kept getting rejected. When I called for help, I was told I needed to amend the return. I didn't need to change anything just resubmit it. No problem. Then it showed both my federal and state returns were accepted. The happy character jumped around showing accepted but refreshed from showing my$1812 refund, it showing I owed $1610. I looked at the amended refund I was told to amend, it showed I paid no taxes for 2025. So now I owed the $1610. I can't get ahold with anyone from turbo tax to tell how to correct this. The state return needs to be amended again to show I did pay my taxes?
