When will the bug(s) in Desktop Version 2025 for Amended Returns be addressed?

SAME PROBLEM but also the amount calculated is incorrect for the additional tax.

PLEASE STOP telling people trivial delay tactic recommendations. (Clear Cache and Cookies, etc. etc.)

Something is severely broken in the desktop software at least for Amended Returns.

Mine shows a large tax already owed from the start (instead of going to zero as it should and is stated it would.)

I also don't get a 1040X in the printout but rather just a copy of the original filed return. But the bigger problem is the math doesn't work for the delta tax amount.

I have been using TurboTax for over 25 years and it isn't my first time filing amended returns either.  I am a software engineer myself, so I am disappointed in the Tech Support delay tactics to avoid admission of obvious bugs.

The only acceptable answer is estimate of when the bug will be fixed and will the software automatically adjust or we need to re-enter the changes.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number  (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

Which line or lines do you see as incorrect? Please provide as much detail as possible.

The tax math is correct on the difference.

 Your total difference is $31,381.

Long Term Capital Gains at 15% would be $4,707

Net Investment Tax @3.8% would be $1,195.

The increase bumped you up to the next income tax bracket so that increased your ordinary income tax by $280.

Total is $6,182

As for the reset to $0, I am unable to see this error on your return or reproduce this error on any mock return I have created.

No, it is INCORRECT!!!!

The total difference should NOT be $31,381!!!!

Further, it STARTED after the Amended Tax was FIRST begun with over $6,000 in tax before I even entered a SINGLE CHANGE.

The change I entered was less than $200 in additional income.  So there is no way for tax to be that high.

AGAIN, note that I said it STARTED with over $6,000 in tax before I entered a single change.  It should have gone to ZERO at that point.

I am sure your software shows it is internally consistent with itself.

What I am trying to communicate is that is wrong.  It somehow still showed me as owing tax I had already paid before I even entered a change.

Can I undo the amendment and start over with the originally submitted and accepted tax return?  Then I can see if it properly goes to zero when starting out.

You dismissed the primary problem with "as for the return to zero, I can't reproduce it on my system".  That is the most infuriating response from any software developer in denial of a bug that a customer has experienced.

Your best option is to start over. Under the File tab in TurboTax Desktop, work through the interview and look for Do you need to change anything else? Select Never mind, I don't need to amend. Then review any areas where you made changes in case some entries remain. Save this file and make a copy in case you need to start over again.

You can also try going to Forms Mode and deleting Form 1040X.

When will the bug(s) in Desktop Version 2025 for Amended Returns be addressed?

I don't see any option to "Never mind, I don't need to amend" after I open the file.

When I go to File after opening the file I already started as Amended, it just gives the option to E-file or mail.

I deleted the only form I added after filing and it goes to the incorrect value of a change (when I have made no changes after the deletion.)

Can I get back to the file as already filed?  (showing the full amount of taxes I already paid)

When will the bug(s) in Desktop Version 2025 for Amended Returns be addressed?

When I deleted the one form I had added, it went back to the amount it started with previously.  But that is the problem.  It should have gone to zero since I already filed and paid the full amount.  There should be no "difference" since the the income it showed was the full amount reported previously.

BTW, when I review my previous paper form as filed, I see the error in the "Amended Return" after I deleted the added form.  It shows the "Correct Amount" for adjusted gross income as the PREVIOUS amount as filed.

Somehow, it started with a lower AGI than the previous filed tax form. The lower AGI is close, but not exact, to the filed taxable income.

If you started with the same .tax2025 file that you e-filed, there is no way to restore your original return other than deleting any changes you made and/or deleting Form 1040X.

Using TurboTax Desktop, it's best to save the original file under another name before you begin the amending process. In TurboTax Online, you would need to download the file to your computer before amending.

Changes you see in your return after you file may be due to software updates that were released after that date. These updates generally do not significantly impact your tax liability unless you filed before a form was finalized.

OK, I got around the problem by Amending the return "again" starting from the amended return with the correct final amount from my original return.

I had to choose options to get to this state, then it showed an amended return starting with zero dollars owed as I originally expected.  Re-entered the form I had to delete to get back to the starting point, and the owed tax was in line with what I expected.

This has happened to me in past years as well, but the starting amount on the amended return wasn't enough that I worried (although I overpaid by about $40 or so as it turned out.)

Why wouldn't TurboTax automatically save the prior file or at least give you that option without requiring the user to manually back it up?

Poor software design.

We have submitted this issue for review by the development team for possible enhancement of the TurboTax amending process.
