When filing an amendment, the refund amount drops to zero. Will that amount change if we qualify for a refund based on the amendment?

When filing an amendment, the refund amount drops to zero. Will that amount change if we qualify for a refund based on the amendment?

Yes, since the amended return is completely separate from the return you have already filed, the refund starts at zero.  Then, as you make the changes any refund amount shown will be in addition to the refund shown on your original return. 

 

It is also possible that an amended return can cause a balance due for the amended return, depending on what is being changed.
