W-2C after return accepted and refund received

I'm a 10+ year Turbo Tax user.  In February 2023  I filed my 2022 federal return and state return (Illinois), and both were accepted by the appropriate revenue services.  I have also already received both refunds due.   AFTER my returns were filed and accepted, my employer sent me a W-2C, which did not change any federal information, but changed the reported the state income by adjusting it down by $1,164.   Do I have to file a 1040X with the federal and state of Illinois or just Illinois?  Can I do that in Turbo Tax?

Don't worry about the federal amended return. If TurboTax let you e-file it and the IRS accepted it, you're golden.

As far as attachments to your state amended return, you're correct that you do need to attach a copy of your federal Form 1040-X and proof of its acceptance.  Since there was no overpayment or balance due, you don't need to attach any more federal items.

As far as Illinois documents, the instructions are fairly vague.  According to What must I attach to my Form IL-1040-X? in the Instructions for Form IL-1040-X, you need to:

[S]ee the instructions for Form IL-1040 and any schedules to see what to attach.

Note:  If the change you are making requires a supporting schedule or form, you must attach it to your Form IL-1040-X. Without proper attachments, we may partially or totally deny your claim.

According to the Instructions for Form IL-1040, you'll need to attach Schedule IL-WIT and your Forms W-2 and 1099 that show Illinois income and withholding.  You should also "include any required attachments (e.g., Schedule M,  Schedule ICR, Schedule IL-E/EIC, Schedule CR, federal Form 1040 and Schedules) with your Form IL-1040."

That said, considering the vagueness of the instructions, it won't hurt if you print and mail the whole amended return, excluding extension forms and any worksheets populated.

You will only need to file an amended return for the state of Illinois. You can do that in TurboTax.

You will not be able to e-file an amended return to Illinois. You'll need to print and mail your return or e-file directly with your state.

Please see this TurboTax help article with instructions for amending your state return.

W-2C after return accepted and refund received

PattiF, I'm new to the community, so I hope it's ok to do a quick follow up on this issue.  I did the entries in Turbo Tax for this amendment for my Illinois return (IL- 1040-X) and it gave me the option of filing a federal 1040-X even though there was no change to federal income for tax purposes.  I submitted the federal not realizing that perhaps I didn't need to.  I don't see a way to change that after the fact.   Also, I did also print the IL-1040-X and the instructions, but it is not at all clear to me what forms I need to mail to the Illinois Department of Review.  Clearly the IL-1040-X, page 1 and 2 of the federal amendment and their acceptance.  Turbo Tax offered to print the entire IL return, which seems to include the pages for the extension, but also the original 1040-IL I filed.  Would appreciate any guidance on that.

The responses to my questions on this amendment issue have been very helpful!   I am almost wrapped up with this and ready to file my IL 1040X, but not sure how to show "proof that the IRS has accepted the Fed 1040X"  Turbo Tax indicated in an email that "Your amended federal tax return was accepted by the IRS".   The IRS site for "Status of My Amendment" shows "received" but indicates it could take 16 weeks to receive final approval.  So what can I send to IL along with my Fed 1040X to show "acceptance"?

Print a copy of your 1040X and send that along with your W2c. If you want you could attach a screenshot of the IRS showing received screen as well.  It would not hurt to also attach your original W2 and a note explaining everything. This should be plenty of information for them to process your amended IL return.
