Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand you are encountering issues with cashing your TurboTax Up to 5 Days Early tax refund check. We are committed to ensuring you access your refund swiftly and smoothly. Please rest assured that your check is legitimate and contains several security features to facilitate a hassle-free deposit.

Tips to deposit (we recommend depositing your check to avoid delays) or cash your check:

  • Deposit at a bank: Depositing your check into your bank account is preferred over cashing it. Check-cashing locations may charge fees and be less likely to cash large checks like tax refunds.
  • Name Matching: For bank deposits, ensure the name on your check matches the name on the bank account where you intend to deposit it.
  • Bank Holds: Your bank may place a temporary hold on the funds until the check clears. This is a standard bank policy and is not an indication the check is fraudulent. We have no control over this process.
  • Bank and check cashing limits: Many banks and check cashing locations have maximum limits on check amounts they will cash. Ask your bank or check-cashing location what their limit is prior to visiting to determine whether you can cash it there.
  • Check Cashing Tips: The person(s) whose name(s) are on the check must be present and present ID to cash the check. For example – if a check name says “John Doe and Jane Doe” on it, then both John Doe and Jane Doe need to cash the check together in person. Each person must bring a valid government-issued identification card – driver’s license, passport, state-issued ID card.
  • Enhanced Security: This check is issued with the highest security standards. If your bank or check-cashing service has any concerns, they can verify it directly with Intuit by calling 1-800-780-9247. A dedicated team is available to assist with verification.
  • Check Returns: If your check is uncashed after 90 days, we will void your check and return your refund to the IRS. You may then work directly with the IRS to receive your tax refund.

Your refund check contains security features to ensure a hassle-free deposit, including:

  • Magnetic ink that's only readable by special check cashing machines.
  • Reflective ink shows hidden words if the check is copied.
  • Images on the check that disappear if the check is copied.
  • Microtext printed on the check that is too small to see with the naked eye, and too small to be copied or scanned.
  • Check background printed with special ink that fades to white when copied and bleeds when it comes in contact with liquids.
  • Special test strips that react to check washing chemicals such as acetone.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.

Did you try taking the check somewhere else? Maybe they just didn't feel like dealing with that high of amount or couldn't and was embarrassed to state that or the employee was incompetent

@richiee110 Same here and nobody has any answers! I’m also banned from the check cashing place because they think it’s fraud. Cross river is not answer the phone and TT knows nothing as usual. My bank rejected it too and I was supposed to have a direct deposit, my state went in there just fine. They need to be transparent and tell people what is going on. How am I and others supposed tog eat their money now? I have a check I can’t cash and the check cashing place showed me other customers checks , we all have the same check numbers!

Why don't you answer the question we are all aware of your customer service links. That's the least helpful answer you could have put on there next to a blank space. I suggest the next person that's an expert that answers this actually put a response down if you actually think we're so incompetent that we didn't already try calling your 1-800 number or chatting with you guys then you are the one who is incompetent. Obviously we've turned to each other because you've done nothing and given no answers.

My sister works as a supervisor for TurboTax and said she has been getting these calls all day long and the number of people who are crying because they need the money is overwhelming. She said that the checks come from Cross River Bank, so obviously have nothing to do with TurboTax, but instead have to do with the bank itself. The only resolves that they were given were to either try cashing the check again in a few days- this makes sense to me because if it's the 5 day early checks having issues.. maybe they can't be cashed earlier than what the IRS would have typically paid out? You could also try depositing it in your bank account and if the bank doesn't believe that it's real, then to call CRB to verify the check (although she said they aren't allowed to tell the customer to contact the bank. No idea why). She said in regards to that, TurboTax can just tell your bank yes it is a legit check but that's about it. The other actual option that they were given is to fill out a form where they void the check and send the funds back to the IRS, the IRS will review the account and re-issue a new check. This process can take up to 10 weeks.

Otherwise, if you leave near NJ or NY, you could just walk into a branch and cash the check.

TurboTax literally doesn't know what's going on though and it's not their fault. They haven't been given a direct answer on what the issue is. I replied to OP, so if you look at my other comment, it will tell you what it looks like from TT's POV (my sister is a supervisor there)

Did you ever get a resolution? I am considering reporting TurboTax and Cross River Bank to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and think everyone else experiencing this should do the same.

Hello, so there are going to be two options if you have gotten a paper check from Cross river/Intuit after doing the 5 day early option...... So option one would be to open a bank account with cross river and deposit the check to that account, or give TurboTax Support a call and they can submit to have the check cancelled and the money sent back to the IRS, then the IRS will send out a paper check that is easier to cash. So in other words the Cross River checks can't be "cashed" but can be deposited and then you will have to wait your banks time line to get the funds after the check clears.

Walmart: Wal-Mart and their partner Certegy made adjustments to their check-cashing policy, and now the majority of checks from Intuit are being successfully cashed at Wal-Mart locations. This change went live 3/7.

  • Amount maximums – customers can cash refund checks up to $7,500 until April 30. Afterwards, it'll be a maximum of $5,000.
  • The person(s) whose name(s) are on the check must be present and present ID to cash the check. For example, if a check name says “John Doe and Jane Doe” on it, then both John Doe and Jane Doe need to cash the check together in person.
  • Each person must bring a valid government-issued identification card—a driver's license, passport, birth certificate, or Social Security card.

Tips to deposit (we recommend depositing your check to avoid delays) or cash your check:

  • Enhanced Security: This check is issued with the highest security standards. If your bank or check-cashing service has any concerns, they can verify it directly with Intuit by calling [phone number removed].  A dedicated team is available to assist with verification.
