Talked to irs today was told that my refund was selected for further review and that can take up to 60 days to approve why is that?

It can be randomly selected by an algorithm used by the IRS to flag potential fraudulent returns, or it could be because the IRS has yet to receive your earnings from your employer(s) from last year, or your earnings don’t match what the IRS has been supplied with. The IRS should be sending you or should have already sent a letter- and it should have a number on it- is it a LTR 4464c or a CP05 letter? Check in the upper right hand corner and see what the code is for the letter. That can give us some insight. I was also notified of a 60 day review (LTR 4464C) on February 18, after I  filed 2-2, I checked tonight and have a direct deposit date of 3-18. I’m hoping all works out for you and for me as well.
