Part Year VA tax

Part year resident of Virginia with minimal VA income.  $3 in VA taxes withheld by an employer.  TurboTax is saying that the full $3 is to be refunded by VA even though the VA taxable income is $282.  VA tax tables included in the 760PY form instructions say that 2% of $282 (= $6) is owed.  Is there a way to force TurboTax to recalculate from the tax tables and pick up the correct amount?

Part Year VA tax

It depends. There may be income that is not included or should not be included in your Virginia (VA) income. Double check your VA return to see if the the actual taxable income represents the correct amount. You can use this information to review the VA Form 760PY form. For example there is a VA standard deduction:

  • Virginia part-year resident can claim a standard deduction, but it must typically be prorated based on the portion of their federal adjusted gross income (FAGI) attributable to Virginia. The deduction is calculated by multiplying the full standard deduction by the ratio of days residing in Virginia to 365 days.
