Just had a bill for 2020 taxes

Am I alone in feeling that all of these government handouts over the last couple of years, have made what was always a simple tax return, into a nightmare? I just received a CP22A notice that I owed $91 for my 2020 taxes.

That year was as normal as ever and I received a decent refund. We always pay extra on our paychecks.

Had to file an amended return as company missed a month of pay on W2. I filed an amended return through TurboTax, which showed an additional refund.  I got an CP21B, that told me a change to my 2020 return had been made and I was due a refund. The amount I received was slightly higher than on the notice. (Neither matched the amount shown in TurboTax when I filed the amended return). So far in 2022, I have received a letter stating 1040-X and telling me that they have amended my 2020 return and my income was less than reported. It went on to tell me that I would receive a refund that matched what was on the earlier CP21B letter. Ok I thought.

Now today I receive a letter a CP22A, stating that changes to my 2020 ,1040 have been made as requested and that I owe $91.

we can't see the IRS notices, the original return, W-2c, or the amended return you filed.

as a guess when you filed the amended return did you reflect the refund from the original return.

did you send in the amended return before the original return was fully processed? this can cause issues. especially since the corrected w-2 from the employer goes first to the Social Security Adm (same as the original) and then it must send updated info to the IRS

someone would need to review all the filings and documents to give you an explanation.  the IRS could be wrong.   hiring a pro would likely cost more than the $90 so call the IRS to get a clear explanation (if they can provide one). Turbotax gets no additional info once a return is accepted so they can't help.

IRS is working hard to catch up on unprocessed 2020 tax returns.

It is unlikely that the adjustment is incorrect.

Thanks for the reply. Obviously cant show the returns and the amended return was done through Turbotax.

Anyway, as noted, $91 isn't as much as getting someone to look at it. I just look at it as I got $91 more of a refund that year than should have.

It just appears that as my returns have always been simple and Standard deductions, the only variable in recent years , is all the giveaways. Not that i'm complaining mind>

I have written a check and mailed it.

Thanks Again
