I started an amended return just to see what would happen if I didn't claim my child. I cancelled without saving it, but this change stuck. How do I "undo" this change?

I do want to file an amended return. I received a 1099-INT for $34 after I filed, and I now owe (only my state) $2. I want to file an amended return mostly because someone else may try to claim the same child, and I want to make sure that my return is 100% solid. So, when I cancelled my amended return after seeing what the effect of removing my dependent, Turbo Tax remembered this change. Now, when I try to add my child back in it tells me that I owe the IRS because someone else claimed her (which was me back in January). Any ideas? I think I may need to call TurboTax if I can figure out how.

to undo changes, reverse, back out, or delete what you did.

That didn't work - it's why I posted the question.

Contact TurboTax Customer Support. They will explain it to you.

Once you are signed into TurboTax and open your return, go to Tax Tools > Tools > Delete a form and then look for the 1040X and delete the form.

@JillS56

deleting 1040-X does not unwind the changes you made to your original tax return.

My experience is TurboTax gets confused if you try to do two amendments.

There is a cancel amendment option.  If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow the steps below. You'll need to undo any changes you made during the amendment process.

  1. Open your return if it isn't already open.
  2. In the left menu, select Cancel Amend.
  3. Select Yes, I want to cancel my amended return and Continue.
  4. Remove any forms or changes you made to your return before or after the amend process was canceled.
  5. Add back in any forms you deleted while amending your return.

UPDATE. THIS IS FRUSTRATING.

1. Deleting the 1040x form didn't correct the issue.

2. There is no form to delete to correct the dependent issue.

2. Calling customer support resulted in being on hold for 45 minutes and then getting disconnected by them without ever speaking to a live person. Argh.

I initially started an amended return was curious what would happen if I allowed my dependent child's other parent to claim her even though I'd already filed. Plus, I received a 1099-INT form for $35 after I filed and wanted to report it. In other words, I had one change I had to make (the 1099-INT) and one change I was curious about.

1. I added the 1099-INT form and that resulted in me owing my State $2.

2. I deleted my dependent child and that resulted in me owing the IRS a few thousand dollars.

I cancelled the amended return I'd started thinking that everything would zero out so that I could just create an amended return for the 1099-INT. But, when I tried to create a new amended return, the changes remained. I followed the advice here and deleted the 1040X form. Didn't work. Additionally, I'm no longer listed as head of household and now it's not even an option for me to select.

I'm going to call again later when I have the ability to be on hold forever, but I'm not optimistic. I may just file the 1099-INT next year if I can't resolve this, but I shouldn't have to do that and I very much dislike having this hanging over me.

If anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!!

Thanks, but this didn't work. Even after removing the 1040X form and cancelling the amended return, my filing status remained single and my dependent child was still removed when I started a new amended return.

Obviously you already filed the original return since you were able to select to amend. You can just add your dependent back the same way you deleted him.  You can also select to add a state. This  will allow you to make changes to the federal return.

I tried that before posting. It will let me add her back in but doesn't help the issue - something about her already being (by me, lol) - and I'm told that I now owe the IRS thousands of dollars. And when I remove her, it again tells me that I owe the IRS thousands of dollars. And whether she's included or not, the amended form won't let me choose head of household status (it's not even an option for me in the amended return).

It seems clear to me that someone inside TurboTax will need to clear it out because nothing is working for me. It's just a matter of being able to get through.

No one here can clear it out.  You will need to go back into your return and click Tax Tools>>Tools>>Delete a form>>Delete next to the 1040X.  This will get rid of the form and let you make the changes to put your return back to what it was prior to starting the amend process.

I've followed these exact steps several times now. And then I start over after deleting the 1040X. And the issue remains. There is clearly a glitch in the system.

TurboTax gets confused if you amend and Cancel or if you try to amend twice.

It is a long-standing "issue".

That is frustrating. It sounds like my only options are to (1) not file an amended return at all, or (2) file an amended return outside of TurboTax. Filing a 1040X outside of TurboTax isn't an option because then I'm guessing I'd lose my audit defense (I think it's called something else this year). And not filing a 1040X puts me more at risk of getting audited because the IRS has received a copy of a 1099 that's not included in my tax return.

I'm going to try calling them back I think. Someone said it wouldn't do any good, but I don't know what else I can do.
