I noticed a stray 1099G after filing both fed and state, from state income tax return, from a amended 2022 filing? Do I amend now?

1099G with a return I received in 2024 from an Amended 2022 FTB CA 540. Do I amend now  IE the Fed 1040x form or wait till they catch it? Both forms for 2024 are filed and accepted and I am awaiting DD of returns.

The 1099-G state refund is only taxable for any year that is itemized.  If you took the standard deduction you would not have to amend the return.  Each year would have to be amended as a separate return.  You can only make changes for one year in that years amendment.  For more information about mending a return, see the link below:

To clarify, did your file your 2024 return and include a Form 1099G that was for 2022? The 1099G information needs to be filed with the correct year's return.

If you have already filed your 2024 returns and and awaiting refunds (the return is the form you file; the refund is the amount you receive back), wait to amend the returns until the refunds are received.

To access your tax return in TurboTax Online after you've e-filed it or printed it as part of mailing your return to the IRS:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Select Tax Home from the menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2024, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you back in).

You'll now be in your return. See this help article for more information.

There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:

  • You realized you missed out on claiming a tax deduction or credit.
  • You accidentally claimed the wrong tax filing status.
  • You need to add or remove a dependent.
  • You forgot to claim taxable income on your tax return.
  • You realize you claimed an expense, deduction, or credit that you weren't eligible to claim.

See this article and this one for more information on filing an amended return with TurboTax.

I did not include this 1099G, which will reduce my Federal return, which is on the way, by the taxes not paid, on this 1099G income, from amending my 2022 state income tax in 2024 return, noted on the 1099G, I found after the fact. Since this income is not State taxable, only the Federal needs amending.

Note I went back and added in this 1099G and it does not affect my standard deduction and is not taxable in my case so amending is a waste of time. Return values that are coming are not adjusted in any way in TurboTax business. Further, there is an error in Turbo in that it only allows a return notation for one year not 2023 and 2022. You can combine totals but only list one year not 2 or 3.

The Turbo tax coders need to go back and fix this!!!

If you took the Standard Deduction on your 2022 federal return or the amended 2022 return you don't need to enter the 1099G Refund.  It is not taxable.

For multiple years.  If you took the Standard Deduction then the state refunds are not taxable and you don't even need to enter them.   If you itemized on 1 year then only enter that year.
