to get (some or all of) the mortgage interest deduction you must be itemizing and exceed the standard deduction
review your other schedule A deductions.
You can amend your return to this claim mortgage interest, but you don't have to, and it might not provide you with a tax benefit, anyway.
Unless all of your itemized deductions, including mortgage interest, add up to more than your standard deduction, you won't get a tax benefit, and in that case you wouldn't need to amend your return.
