I accidentally filed as an independent on my taxes but I am not. This will really mess up my parent’s taxes. How can I amend this?

I already submitted my taxes and didn’t realise until my parents asked if I filed as a dependent or an independent

You just need to amend the return. You will see an option for that on your home page when you log into TurboTax. Look under Your tax returns and documents on at the bottom of the page. You may not see an option to amend your 2023 return yet as it is early in the tax filing season.

Thank you, I will be waiting and checking every day until it is available. My parents have not filed their taxes yet, and preferably I would like to fix this before they do.

If you already e-filed and said that you could not be claimed, your parents' return that claims you is going to be rejected when they try to e-file.   Even if you amend, they have no option except to file by mail this year.  They will need to print, sign and mail their own return that claims you as a dependent.

You cannot amend until the IRS has fully processed your tax return.  The Form 1040X you will need becomes available in late February.  Your parents do not need to wait for you to amend.  They can mail their return whenever they want to.

@jackta01 Oh......and if it is any comfort to you or your parents-----kids and students filing first tax returns make this mistake all the time.  We will get gobs of posts just like yours---from kids who said they could not be claimed----and from the parents whose e-files are being rejected.
