You cannot e-file a 2021 return using TurboTax. E-filing is permanently closed for 2021 returns. Maybe a professional tax preparer in your locality can still e-file it for you---for a price. But if you use TurboTax the only way to file a 2021 return is by mail.

You can use TurboTax or other tax preparation software providers to e-file your 2022 federal tax return in January 2023.
The IRS has not yet posted a date in January in 2023 when they will start accepting tax return. However, the IRS normally begins accepting tax returns in mid to late January.
Any federal returns e-filed prior to the IRS opening day are held on servers. When the IRS begins to accept returns the IRS pulls the returns from the servers. They pull in batches so it is Not a first-in-first-out situation.
2021 I know about 2022 ty
I wonder if another online prep co would be able to do this. On the IRS website it states that starting in January you can efile past returns. Not sure where to do this though. Freefile from them you can't. Ty
@minuet80203 Paid tax professionals with professional tax software can e-file 2021 when e-filing opens again. You cannot e-file a 2021 tax return using do-it-yourself tax software. We cannot recommend a tax pro in your area--it is up to you to do the homework to find one.

Prior year returns can only be filed electronically by registered tax preparers for the two previous tax years. The IRS does not allow electronic filing for prior year returns through self-preparation websites
