Does the blue TurboTax status bar have anything to do with the actual status of your refund or is it just a generic estimate?

See the IRS FAQ here :  https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Once a tax return (not refund)   has been Accepted for processing by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.

The IRS usually issues refunds within 3 weeks of the acceptance of your e-filed tax return.

However, the IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting February 28, 2023, if these taxpayers chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

This concerns only returns claiming the Earned income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax credit (ACTC), but not those only claiming the Child Tax Credit (CTC).

Please read this IRS document for more information.

Sometimes people get confused by the “summary” given by TurboTax and use the wrong amount for the federal refund.  Make sure you are only using the federal refund amount, and not an amount that combined your federal and state refunds.

Your federal refund amount is on line 35a of your Form 1040
