You cannot file a new return when one is already in the hands of the IRS.  The IRS letter will tell you what the IRS changed on your return.  The letter should also tell you what to do.  If the IRS already changed your original return then you do not send them another one.  Read the letter on what to do.

Use the procedure to correct the mistake as recommended by the IRS letter.

@barbara0944- - what did the IRS state? did they say they would fix the error? 

 

the most common error this year relates to the Recovery Rebate Credit and the Child Tax Credit.  if that is what the error relates to, then no need to amend; the IRS has adjusted your return and refund.
