Covid relief, 2nd round

Dear Turbotax,

We filed with you last year and had one of our Granddaughters listed as  a dependent. We didn't expect any covid19 relief at the time because we hadn't had her in our custody for very long. We've since then gotten custody of our other Granddaughter and have claimed both on our tax returns this year. We received no payments for either of our Granddaughters with this latest covid19 relief payment of 600.00 dollars per household beneficiary and what we want to know is, how can we get the covid19 relief that we are entitled to for our Granddaughters and stop another illegal payment to fraudulent people in the state of Montana, that had the girls prior to us getting custody of them in March and July of 2020? Any help here would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Dennis & Karen Pelton

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check this year, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021—if you are eligible. It will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

We know that the IRS is already revising the 2020 Form 1040 to include the 2nd stimulus, but that change will entail a lot of re-programing at the IRS and for the tax software programs.  It may be at least a month — or longer— before the forms are changed.  Do NOT be in a hurry to file your 2020 tax return until more is known. Give some extra time to the IRS and the software programmers so that the software can handle the new 2nd stimulus, so that you can get it all by filing ONE time.  It is never a good idea to file too early; filing your 2020 return too soon may result in a lot of extra confusion that can be avoided if you wait and file a little later.

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the Federal Review section,  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

If you qualify for the stimulus and have not received yet, you can claim a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 tax return.  Expatriates qualify for the second stimulus check. You qualify if you fall within the income threshold, have a social security number, and file taxes — even if you live overseas.

To claim the credit in TurboTax, here are the steps:

  • After sign in to your account, follow prompts
  • To your left, select Federal
  • On the next screen, from the top, select Other Tax Situations and Done with Others (at the bottom)
  • On the screen, Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, select Continue
  • Select "Yes", enter the amount you have received for both stimulus payments and follow prompts
  • If you did not receive any amount, enter zeros.  The program will calculate your Recovery Refund Credit amount as the stimulus payment you are entitled to.

You can also check your status with the IRS: IRS Get My Payment
