Can I use a later version of turbotax to file earlier year returns (or amend them)?

No, you cannot. The 2018 editions of TurboTax can only be used to prepare returns for the 2018 tax year.

if you owe for 2017, you need to file. if you were due a refund and did not file an extension, your refund has been forfeited. if it was extended you have until 10/15/2021 to file the return to obtain your refund.
