Hi,
I just mailed 2018 1040x and now working on 2019 tax return.
I am now on the state section and turbotax automatically indicated the last year's tax liability as the amount populated in 2018 amended state tax return.
I just filed 1040x and did not file the state tax amendment yet.
Should I wait till amendment is done both federal and state and resume 2019 tax?
Or can I just correct the automatic input to the original 2018 state tax (it was refund) amount ?

Why have you not amended the state return yet? Sounds like you have it complete since the information is transferring to 2019 and maybe just haven't mailed it in yet?
If you go ahead and do the amendment now, you can continue with your 2019 return using the amended state tax liability for last year that is populated. I don't know what state you are filing, so this may or may not even be an issue, but if it is a state where last years tax liability is used for current year calculations, you don't want to have to amend 2019 after you file your 2018 amendment, so I would go ahead and file the 2018 amendment now and continue filing your 2019 with the amended number.
Thank you for your advise.
I thought I have to wait till 1040x is processed before I file/mail state return.
(I thought if any correction is made by IRS on my 1040x and then I have to use the correct number on state amendment just to be sure... I don't think there is any error in my 1040x though...)
What is the usual practice in terms of state amendment filing after 1040x is filed?
I just checked my usps tracking and my 1040x was delivered just yesterday.
Standard practice when amending both fed and state is to mail them both at the same time ... one doesn't need to process before the other.
Thank you for your reply.
I will just mail state too and just finish up my 2019 return.
Thank you!
