Amended 2021 return, ended up owing more tax. The instructions page is confusing, has words that imply Direct Debit AND paying via mailed voucher form/check.

Under the Balance Due/Refund section (removing amounts), it reads:
Your return shows you have elected to pay your balance due of $x.00 by Direct Debit using the following information:
- Amount Withdrawn: $x.00
- Date of Withdrawal:

Then in the "what you need to mail" section, it says to "Mail your completed
Form 1040-V with included payment of $x.00 made payable to United States Treasury."

So which is it? Do I send the voucher in with a check (and the direct debit stuff is just a bug in the software), or is it going to be handled electronically?

@sbeaureg

when filing federal Form 1040-X,

the amount you owe is on Line 20.

Thanks for the feedback. The amount is on the form that I copied from, my wording wasn't the best in this post. I just needed to know if the "direct debit" wording was just leftover from something else, which it apparently is.

Really appreciate all the assistance from this community on a Sunday!

Are you going to e-File 1040-X?

The best way to pay is on the IRS make a payment page, online.

Earlier today I completed my amended 1040-X via TurboTax, and was then left with the -V voucher form and instructions. I'll go and look at the make a payment page, I had forgotten about that, since I haven't had to pay the IRS outside of TurboTax for quite some time now.

Thanks again

I recently filed an amended federal return and saw the direct debit page come up so I used it.

The money has not been debited out of my checking account yet, however, the amended form was accepted.

I printed the Amended 2021 tax forms via turbo tax and I don't see any place that I can see if the direct debit was successful or actually used.  How can I check if Turbo Tax provided a successful direct debit?  Can anyone confirm Turbo Tax if uses direct debit for Federal tax amendments, and how to see if it was successful if the money has not yet come out of my bank account.

Yes you can have direct debit of a balance due on an amended return and yes you can enter the DD info into the system however TT doesn't make the payment.   The payment info is sent to the IRS with the 1040X and they are the responsible party to complete the debit as requested.   If the amended return has been accepted for processing it could take a while for the debit to happen as they are woefully behind again this year.

If you save a PDF with all the worksheets you should see the debit request in the filing instructions.  And ignore the 1040-V as it is not used with the 1040X.
