We received a 5071C letter from the IRS dated 4/21/2021 on 4/22/2021 - seems pretty impossible right there. The letter asked us to verify our identity before processing any credit or issue our 2020 refund which is interesting since our refund was deposited in our bank on 4/21/2021. We were able to verify my husbands identity online but not mine. (We filed jointly.) Calls to the number on the form tell you that they are too busy and call back the next day. We checked our credit reports and don't see anything unusual there.
Has anyone else experienced this? Was there an attempted tax return filing with our social security number? Should we continue to try to verify my information or do anything else? Thanks in advance!

The 5071C letter means that the IRS has received your return, but needs more information from you to verify your identity. Since you already received your refund, please call the IRS at 800-830-5084 for assistance.
