5 digit signature pin

I breezed right through my return without writing it down and I need to amend after forgetting to add a form, but is it true that if you use the same account (username) each year, the 5 digit PIN you created for your return (signature) will automatically carry forward to your next year's return as the Prior Year PIN? Last year's AGI carried over to my return as well. I remember the box being automatically filled when I filed. When I go to amend will it be filled in again?

It should be.  But slow down.

You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted.   You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS.  Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.

Do not try to change anything on your return now.  When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally.   You have to wait.   Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X   --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.

The Form 1040X you need is under revision and is not ready yet.  The Form 1040X does not become available in the software until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).

I understand. I was just curious if the pin carries over. I was in no rush to amend as I've been told it won't open until the end of March. Can you explain what you mean when you say form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looks when filed originally? Won't the information from the original be duplicated once the form becomes available? I was subject to kiddie tax and made an estimate and intended to go back and correct it before April 15th so I can pay any leftover tax due if required.

Sometimes users panic when they realize they need to make a change on their tax return and go into the software and start changing things before they are really using the Form 1040X.   When you do that, you make a mess that will not work correctly when you try to use the 1040X.  It is important to create the entries in the 1040X from the return exactly as it looked when sent to the IRS originally.

Thank you for the information. It's my first time ever amending so I definitely wouldn't want to rush and mess anything up. Is there a specific reason why it takes so long for them to process again? I'm not completely sure if I'll be due back a refund since I owed federally. My current return was accepted and processed so I'm just waiting now. I filed as independent this year and if congress passes the third stimulus check soon, it said that it'd go off 2020 or 2019 for those who haven't filed when the pass comes. Will it still use my original information in the system despite the amendment?
