2020 Tax Return status

I filed my 2020 tax returns on 3/12/21. Both my federal and state returns were accepted, per TurboTax. However, I checked the IRS website and it states “your 2020 tax return is not processed”

Is this something I should be worried about?

I’m hoping to get the 3rd stimulus check. But if my 2020 returns aren’t processed early enough, I may not get the stimulus. (I am aware that if your 2020 returns aren’t processed, they will base the stimulus check off of your 2019. Unfortunately, I had to file my 2019 taxes by paper mail, that too is still being processed.)

How long does it take for IRS to process my returns after I receive confirmation from TurboTax that both my federal and state returns were accepted?

2020 Tax Return status

The IRS processes most tax returns within 21 days. However, this year, they're taking much longer. The IRS doesn’t share your information with us so I can’t tell you why you haven’t received your refund.

  • I think one of the main reasons is because the IRS is trying to send out millions of the third stimulus payments and the regular refunds have been delayed for processing until later. Many tax filers, like yourself, are still waiting for refunds even though they filed in February.

For other reasons why your refund may be delayed, see What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?

  • The best way to know what's going on, is to keep checking Where's My Refund, to see if your refund status has been updated by the IRS.

We're waiting for IRS guidance on how you can claim the third stimulus payment if you didn't get the full stimulus amount or your stimulus payment was missing money.

You can check the IRS Get My Payment tool to see if the IRS has issued your stimulus payment. If it reads, "Payment Status Unavailable", don't worry. That just means they haven't sent it to you. Keep checking daily for updates.

Note: The stimulus payments are not taxable to you.
