The software for e-filing 1040X forms has not been readied or approved by the IRS yet for TurboTax users.  Although the IRS will accept e-filed amended returns. only some professional tax prep software programs have the capability to do so at this point.  So for now, either mail your amended return or wait for TurboTax to be able to e-file it later.  We do not know yet when that will be.

TurboTax now says that e-filing of Form 1040-X for 2019 will be available in TurboTax by the end of this week.

So what is the deadline to file 2019 1040X electronically?
Also I used eFile.com to e-file my 2019 return and subsequently I received refund as well.

However now I want to prepare my 1040x using tt desktop or online, could I prepare 1040x using tt and file it electronically as well?

@amit2020 You have three years to file an amended return.  So for an amended 2019 return you have until the year 2023.

If you did not use TurboTax to prepare your 2019 return, it is possible to amend the return using TurboTax but it will really be a pain.  It would be better to use the software or service used to file originally.  If a paid preparer made a mistake on your tax return, that tax preparer should do the amended return for you at no charge.

In order to use TurboTax to amend your 2019return, you need to purchase the desktop software for 2019 and re-create the return EXACTLY as it appeared when it was filed with the IRS/states.  Every line has to be the same.  Then you have to "trick" the software into thinking you filed by saying you will mail the return. (but do not mail it)   AFTER that, you use the software to prepare a Form 1040X, which has to be printed, signed and mailed to the IRS.  It takes the IRS about 3-4 months to process an amended return.

@amit2020 You are welcome!  Do not send in an amended return until your original return has been fully processed---or it can cause confusion and delays.

There are restrictions with the new 1040X efiling which may include using the same software that you used to efile the original return ... so switching to the TT program may not get you the result you seek.  Return to the program you used to complete the amended return.
