After filing my 2021 return, I selected direct debit and my balance was debited. I realized afterward that I had forgotten an important piece of information on my original return and filed an amended return which resulted in an additional balance due. I do not recall being given the option to choose a direct debit date for this additional balance. Will this balance be debited from my account automatically on April 18? The instructions for the amended return state that I have elected to pay by Direct Debit, but the 'Date of Withdrawal' section is blank. The same instructions page also states I need to mail 1040-V with the payment included, so I am unsure whether I need to pay now or just wait for the payment to be debited later this month. I want to avoid a situation where I pay now, and then get direct debited again, as my balance due is quite significant.

Your original return is processed separate from your Amended return. No payment information is sent with an Amended return.
Any taxes owed on an Amended can be mailed with a check and payment voucher (1040-V).
OR, for Federal you can go to the IRS website, to pay online.
For State, you can check your State's website for payment options.

I have a similar question. My initial filing, I owed, and chose the bank debit. In my amended return what I owed was decreased. It appeared that they will be sending me a check, so I am guessing they will still deduct the original filing amount from my account. However, the software also printed the Payment Voucher with the net amount of the two returns, so I am now concerned, is there anything I need to do? I don't want to send them a check AND have my account debited for the larger amount.
The IRS will debit the amount due from your original filing. The Amended Return will be processed separately, and will take at least 12-16 weeks to process.
Then you are correct, that they will send you a check for the amount overpaid.
@Mel M
when i filed my Maryland state taxes on January 9th 2025 I filed electronically and i think i filed to early and i left out my W-2 on my state of Maryland return and it told me i had 474 refund coming to me, but as soon as i got my W-2 from my job i amended my state tax return and added my W-2 information on January 31st of 2025 and the tax software i am using TurboTax told me that i am due $352 in Maryland state taxes and I've only worked in Maryland for less than a month I moved to Maryland in December and had wages, tips and other compensation of $144 and i had no federal income tax withheld on my w2 so i just really know what to do since i just now amended my state return and I know my amended return will take up to 12 weeks to process in the system and my balance of $352 I need to pay in Maryland State taxes is due by April 15th so how will that work if my amended return it wouldn't be processed within that due timeframe for me to pay I really need to know if I can pay after accepted by TurboTax.
Most likely, Maryland will process the refund from your originally filed return and you should receive it within a couple of weeks. You then have until April 15th to pay the balance due for your amended Maryland return.
That being said, If you received a W2 after filing your returns, you also need to file an amended Federal return. Your federal return includes all of your income, from all states. Also, you mention that you moved to Maryland in December, so you will most likely need to file a return for the state you lived in from January through November in addition to your Maryland part-year return.
Can I submit a pv voucher to state of maryland if I amended my tax and it is processing the return 502x electronically and I have a due payment of $352, and on my original 502 have a refund of $474 that is incorrect cause i put residency as part year and I'm full resident and that's is still processing. BOTH ARE PROCESSING. Thank you I appreciate the help provided.
Yes, you can send the payment with a copy of your voucher from your return or you can pay online.
So if it hasn't been processed I can still send payment.
If you Amended your Maryland return before the original return was processed and the amended returns shows a balance due, AND you included the amount of your original Refund in your Amendment, you can mail your payment to Maryland as shown on the Amended Return with the Payment Voucher.
Don't forget to Amend your Federal return also to include the W-2 you received after filing.
