Exactly. A certified real estate appraiser can conduct a date of death appraisal, which is the gold standard for the IRS.

Thank you both AnnetteB6 and tagteam,

I can certainly do that thank you. I am working on my taxes now and I am getting ready for all the answers once I can contact a real estate appraiser and find out the value of the house at the time of death. However I did not get a 1099-s form and I feel if anyone got it or will receive it that it will most likely be the executor of the will. I have the TurboTax Premier edition as that is what Turbo Tax said I needed to list the inherited house capital gains and or loses. I can not find a 1099-s form on Turbo Tax Premier. I can find a 1099-B but that does not look like the form I need to fill out. Is there a 1099-s form in Turbo Tax Premier and if so where is it? Thanks again.

@hyaduckh

There is no 1099-S formatted entry in the TurboTax Interview section (Step-by-Step).

Enter the information under Sale of Home or Investment Income (Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds) depending upon whether the property was held for personal use or for investment.

Thank you tagteam! I guess I must be doing it correct because I used the 1099-B form. The house was never an investment. It was left to us and we sold it as soon as we got all the paperwork done. It just doesn't look right but I guess it is. Thank you for all you advise, time and help.
