Original Tax Return required to mail form 8453 (8949), but I need to amend the return

Hi,

I filed my taxes (for 2022) and turbotax required me to mail form 8453/8949. (I guess I only put the numbers for sum of sections) However, I noticed there was some mistakes after I filed it, so I need to amend my return (capital loss calculation was off).

If I file amended return with all the transaction attached to it (using Turbotax's import functionality), do I still need to mail form 8453/8949 for original return?

Yes, the 8453 should be mailed within 3 days of filing. You should not file the amended return until the original is processed and settled. The IRS may decide to alter the original such that an amended is not needed.

Thanks @AmyC  for replying back, but my federal/state returns have been already accepted. For the missing capital loss (that I would be eligible for carryover next year), shouldn't I need to amend it?

Also, for 8453 form, would I need to mail the original version? or the correct version? I thought amend version would clear out the mistake that I did.

Yes, you do want to amend after the original is done processing. Accepted is not processed. Once money is settled, then you can file your amended return.

You want to go ahead and file the original 8453 just to make sure the original return is complete. If you want to add a note that you intend to amend and these forms will remain support, you can. It is highly unlikely that anyone would read the note though. The IRS is changing and the scans seem quicker.

When you send the 8453 for the amended return, make a note that it is for an amended return on the 8453.
