Original and amended return

Hello, my partner filed his original return without the 1095-A and some other 1099 forms (I think) as this was his first year on a marketplace health plan and investing. He has since filed an amended tax return and sent it by certified mail, and received confirmation of receipt from the IRS a few days ago.

His original return was supposed to be about $1000 and when completing the amended tax return, TurboTax noted the refund difference (displayed on top left of the screen) was going to be ~$600. Does this mean his total refund will be ~$400 or are those the amounts he will be refunded per return, so ~$1600 total?

His original return was accepted in early February and the estimated refund date was a month ago. Now the status bar on IRS Where's My Refund is gone and it just says it will be processed. The amended return status is not trackable yet. We're confused about what's happening with both returns as well, if they're both getting processed at the same time?

Anyways, we're just so lost with these two returns as we've never amended and neither of our returns have taken this long to process, so we're hoping to get some advice on this (we tried calling the local IRS as well and none of the options seemed to cover this subject).

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Original and amended return

Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are claiming any previously unclaimed credits, you will see the difference as an additional refund amount.

But, the IRS may have noticed that the 1095-A or other income was not reported and send a notice. Once the return is filed and accepted, TurboTax is not updated regarding the processing of refunds or notices. Just keep an eye on it, and you may have to contact the IRS if too much time has elapsed.

You should not have amended until the first return was fully processed and you got the first refund.  In case the IRS changes it.

You will still get the first refund or need to pay the original tax due.  Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.  And make sure the original refund or tax paid shows up on the amended return.  You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

You have to include a check for a tax due when you mail the amended return.  Do not use any vouchers that may print out.  If you have a refund they will mail you a check.  They don’t do Direct Deposit for refunds.

Amended returns can only be mailed.  It can take them 16 weeks for the IRS to process them.  And they only mail checks for refunds.   After 3 weeks you can track it here,

Thanks so much for the information!

We checked the amended return and there is no amount under lines 16 and 20 so I guess that means he does not owe additional tax even after amending his return. By chance, do you know what happens in this case, if someone files their amended return before the original refund gets issued? Wondering if this complicates things or further delays his refund.

Thank you so much!

The original return with missing forms was electronically filed in early February and he has not received notice from the IRS yet, though maybe he won't anymore since he submitted he mailed in his amended return already. How much time would you consider to be too much since filing? I believe next week will mark 2 months since original filing.
