It has nothing to do with your 2017 taxes, but may require you to amend a previous year’s tax return.
On Form 1098-T, Box 4 shows any adjustments made for a prior year to qualified tuition and related expenses that were reported on a prior year’s Form 1098-T in Box 2. This Box 4 indicates that there was a reduction in tuition bill during a prior year.
For example, if you were billed in 2016 for 2017 classes, but then withdrew from some of those 2017 classes, Box 4 will indicate the amount that your tuition billed in 2016 decreased because of your withdrawal.
What does this mean for you? If you claimed an education credit in a prior year, you may need to amend the education credit claimed on the prior year return, if the reduced amount of tuition and related expenses will affect the credit amount you received in the prior year (and it may not).
See “Recapture” in the index of IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education.
