You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted. You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS. Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.
Do not try to change anything on your return now. When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally. You have to wait. Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.
The 2020 Form 1040X does not become available until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).

The 1040X will not be available in the software until March 26. You are correct that the the paper form is on the IRS site. You can print out that 1040X form if you want to use it—-and prepare your amended return by hand to mail in instead of waiting to use the software and e-file it. It takes the IRS 4-6 months to process an amended return.

If the mistake you made is keeping someone else from claiming the dependents from e-filing---that mistake is un-fixable by amending your return. They cannot e-file this year. A return claiming the same SSN now has to be printed, signed and mailed no matter when you amend your return.
Ok,
I'm in this situation. My son pulled the trigger on his taxes and answered incorrectly about allowing me to claim him as a dependent so that I can file as Head of Household.
So, if I correctly understand your comment the steps would be...
1. He must file an amended paper return showing that someone else can claim him.
2. I file a paper return claiming him so that I capture Head of Household.
Your comment implies that I the amended status will take 4-6 months?
What happens with my return in the interim? I cannot afford to pay the tax bill without the Head of Household status. Do they just push it through and catch up on review later?
This couldn't happen at a worse time.
Yes the IRS will process your mailed return as HOH ----since you have to file on paper it will take longer unfortunately since mailed returns do take longer. But you do not have to wait for them to process your son's amended return.
This problem is a common one for parents of teenagers and young adults who do not understand the impact on their parents' returns when they say they cannot be claimed as someone else's dependent. Sorry.
I'm also looking to amend my tax return... I realized I made a mistake and forgot to claim a 1099.
You say here that the 1040x form isn't available in the software till march 26th but this site your referenced shows that it is available?? https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/new-information-for-form-1040-x-filers
Is it or isn't it?
I still haven't heard from them after my original e-file on Feb 20. It just says accepted. Can I amend or do I have to wait?
